Episode 8 & Episode 9 | The Many Journeys of Lam Lo Parts 2 & 3
If you haven't yet listened to Part 1 of Lam Lo's story, click here.
In Part 2, Lam Lo is determined to escape Vietnam. He and Ann, his wife, hike through the jungle at night, looking for a path to the sea. After several failed attempts, they find passage on a boat of 325 people to Malaysia. Eventually, they wind up at the refugee camp on Bidong Island. Bidong had an estimated capacity of 4,500 people. In 1979, the year the Los arrived, the population on the island surpassed 40,000.
In Part 3, Lam shares how the Los came to the United States, and how they re-made their lives and careers after arriving to America with only $2. $2. He also offers pragmatic advice on how to have a long-lasting and good marriage.
Sometimes as a writer, the hardest part of writing a story is doing its subject justice. Such is the case here. I'm very grateful to Lam Lo and his family, especially Alex, for entrusting me with it and for sharing it. It has made me laugh and cry, and I'm humbled to share it with you.
